National trails Day June 4th:
Mayor Patchen and the Village Board of Trustees, Senator Michael Nozzolio, Assemblyman Brian Kolb, Waterloo in Bloom members and the family of Vern Sessler walked along the towpath from Oak Island to Locust Street to observe the work in progress on the trail connecting Oak Island to the downtown business district and a unveiling of signs dedicating the trail as “Vern’s Way” in memory of Vern Sessler.

The Waterloo in Bloom committee has adopted the area of land from the towpath to Main Street, just behind the Save-a-Lot store, as a walking path named “Vern’s Way” as a memorial to Laverne M. Sessler, Waterloo businessman who died in April 2005.  Plans are now being drawn to landscape the area.   The Oak Island area, with its’ improved facilities, docks, picnic areas has seen lots of use by travelers on the canal.  “Vern’s Way” will encourage them to explore the downtown area, eat in restaurants and visit our museums. 

Below is a preliminary design of our plan for landscaping of the area.
