The back side of the Village Office building at |
The founders of Memorial Day, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, the Woodie car, women's rights and other images of Waterloo's history will be unveiled during Celebrate Commemorate events. The images will be included in a giant mural painted on the back of the village office building. Muralist David Serotkin will begin painting the 90-foot by 30-foot mural in early May and will complete the work, weather permitting, in time for the dedication at noon on Sunday, May 27. The public is invited to stop by and watch Serotkin work. The project is sponsored by the Village of Waterloo. "We are so excited about this project," said village trustee David Duprey, co-chair of the Celebrate-Commemorate committee. Located at the end of Vern's Way, it welcomes visitors from the Cayuga-Seneca Canal to the business district. It is an introduction to our proud history." Among the post card images on the mural are pictures of Gen. John A. Murray and Henry Welles, founders of Memorial Day; a Woodie station wagon that was manufactured in Waterloo; the Cayuga-Seneca Canal that predated the Erie; and last year's Healing Field of 1,500 massed flags. The mural also pays tribute to Waterloo where the first women's rights convention was planned, and includes the seal and a map of the village. Serotkin was born and raised in Pennington, NJ and now keeps his studio and home in Locke, NY. He painted murals for the city of Philadelphia through The Mural Arts Program before relocating to the region with his wife in 2004. Since his arrival, he has completed a number of public projects in Syracuse, NY and been a part of several exhibitions in the area. Serotkin holds a bachelor’s degree of Fine Arts from Carnegie Melon University. He received a Syracuse University Fellowship in 2005 and currently is pursuing a Master’s degree in painting.
